Winter Service Car Care Musts

Taking care of your car means a lot more than keeping the gas tank filled, and different seasons and conditions call for different types of care. Every year, especially if you live in a colder climate where temperatures regularly drop below freezing, you want to make sure to take care of specific winter service needs for your car to keep yourself safe while driving and to ensure your car functions properly and doesn't have serious issues.

You might be surprised to know that winter oil changes are a little bit different than those you get during the summer months, so make sure you take your car in for a winter service at the onset of the season to get a winterized oil change. Since oil tends to get thicker when the weather gets colder, a certain type of oil is required during colder temperatures to keep the engine well lubricated.

Replacing your old windshield wiper blades is an absolute must during winter months. In fact, even if you got newish ones during the summer, you want to check to make sure that the blades wipe the window clean and are strong instead of flimsy. Winter means having to wipe a lot more than some summer rainfall from the windowsill so make sure you have sturdy wipers and plenty of windshield washer fluid.

Have the mechanic check the batter and make sure there are no corrosion issues and that it's able to hold a good charge. This will help cut down on the likelihood of you needing to find someone to jump start your car for you in the middle of a blizzard which can make for a very helpless situation.

Your tire pressure will be checked during a winter service to make sure your tires are ready to handle the often slick and slippery roads of winter. You may even want to really consider getting a set of snow tires if you live in an area with lots of hills that gets a lot of snow each year.
